This hearty homemade tomato meat sauce is rich, rustic and meaty, full of traditional red-sauce Italian-American flavors. It’s perfect for a weeknight and it’s ready to eat in about 30 minutes! Sauce your favorite pasta shape with this thick tomato sauce, or layer it into a cheesy lasagna.

Ingredients

garlic

parsley

tomato paste

olive oil

(ground meat)

onion

canned tomato

fennel

red wine

chili flakes dried oregano

Season ground meat with salt and fennel seed.

Soften chopped onion in olive oil in a large skillet.

Add the garlic and chili flakes.

Stir in the meat.

Brown the meat, add red wine and cook a few seconds.

Stir in tomato paste and crushed tomatoes.

Cook the sauce with the lid partially covering the pan for about 15 minutes, until it’s thickened.

Meat sauce is not just for spaghetti — it’s good matched with just about any pasta shape you like.

Don’t forget a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, grana padano or pecorino Romano!
